Drake has criticized the Grammy Awards after leaving this year’s event without winning anything. He later said that the awards event “doesn’t dictate sh*t in our world” while congratulating his fellow rappers who won awards on February 4, 2024.
He wrote: “All you incredible artists remember this show isn’t the facts, it’s just the opinion of a group of people whose names are kept a secret. Literally. You can Google it. Congrats to anybody winning anything for Hip Hop, but this show doesn’t dictate sh*t in our world.”
Additionally, Drake reposted his 2019 Best Rap Song acceptance speech, rejecting the idea of competing with other artists. Drake’s last Grammy victory was in 2019, when ‘God’s Plan’ won Best Rap Song.
At the time, he said: “We play in an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport. It is not the NBA. This is a business where sometimes it is up to a bunch of people that might not understand what a mixed race kid from Canada has to say, or a brother from Houston right there, my brother Travis. You’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word, if you are a hero in your hometown. If there is people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don’t need this right here, I promise you, you already won.”
Drake’s joint ‘Her Loss’ album with 21 Savage received a nomination for Best Rap Album. Additionally, the duo’s ‘Rich Flex’ song was nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, and ‘Spin Bout U’ was nominated for Best Melodic Rap Performance.
Killer Mike won the first three awards. Lil Durk and J. Cole’s ‘All My Life’ won Best Melodic Rap Performance.
Drake withdrew from the 2022 nomination process and has boycotted the Grammy Awards. He didn’t clearly explain his withdrawal or his decision to resubmit his work for review. He was nominated for Best Rap Performance for his ‘Way Too Sexy’ song, which features Future and Young Thug, and Best Rap Album for his ‘Certified Lover Boy’ LP.
Following the enormous success of his ‘After Hours’ album in 2020, The Weeknd was left out of the nominations for the awards event, which was also slammed by Drake.
He said: “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artist that exists now and the ones that come after.
Drake continued saying: “It’s like a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just won’t change their ways. The other day I said @theweeknd was a lock for either album or song of the year along with countless other reasonable assumptions and it just never goes that way. This is a great time for somebody to start something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come.”
